How a longitude becomes D9

Follow the nine-part mapping rather than memorizing a separate chart.

Explanation

A sign contains Navamsha numbers 1 through 9. The exact degree inside the natal sign decides which Navamsha contains the planet.

The traditional sequence can be taught by sign modality: movable signs begin from the same sign, fixed signs begin from the ninth sign, and dual signs begin from the fifth sign.

The software uses the equivalent continuous 3°20′ segmentation across the full 360° zodiac, which avoids lookup-table mistakes.

Navamsha is derived from the exact natal degree; it is not a second independent sky chart. Always preserve the D1 placement and use D9 to compare how the same graha maps into the ninth division.

A useful D1↔D9 comparison asks whether the sign/dignity changes, whether the graha becomes Vargottama, and where it falls by house in D9. It should not turn every difference into “good” or “bad.”

Step by step

  1. Confirm the natal degree.
  2. Find the Navamsha number inside the natal sign.
  3. Map it to the D9 sign.
  4. Compare D1 and D9 sign/dignity/house.
  5. Return to the natal topic before interpreting.

Key points

  • D9 is derived from D1 longitude.
  • Vargottama means same Rashi in D1 and D9; it is a structural fact, not an automatic verdict.
  • D9 refines; it does not replace D1.

Common mistake

Do not read a D9 placement as if it were the planet’s astronomical natal longitude.

Do it yourself

  1. Choose one planet in Navamsha Lab.
  2. Write its D1 sign/degree, Navamsha number, D9 sign and D9 house.
  3. State whether it is Vargottama and explain how you know.

  1. Navamsha Lab
